Spongilla spicules are tiny needle-like structures derived from Spongilla lacustris, a freshwater sponge belonging to the phylum Porifera and the class Demospongiae. Similar to how humans have a skeletal framework composed of cartilage, sponges have spicules that serve as their structural units. These spicules are primarily made of silica and vary in size, with some being microscopic and known as microscleres. When refined for cosmetic purposes, these spicules are found in abundance, with thousands per gram. Measured in micrometers (previously known as microns), these spicules are incredibly small, being a fraction of a millimeter in size.
